I was just walking thru the warehouse where I work and the guys were listening to the local rock station and Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by the Light” was on. As I walked back to my desk (which is no longer in the corner BTW), I started to thinking about cover tunes. I think this is one of the only songs that I like the cover version better than the original by Bruce Springsteen. How do the versions of these songs compare to you?
Come Together – The Beatles vs. Aerosmith
You Really Got Me – The Kinks vs. Van Halen
Turn the Page – Bob Seger vs. Metallica
War Pigs – Black Sabbath vs. Faith No More
Land of Confusion – Genesis vs. Disturbed
Live and Let Die – Wings vs. Guns n’ Roses
Helter Skelter – The Beatles vs. Motley Crue
Love Reign O’er Me – The Who vs. Pearl Jam
As a side note, I really don’t like when a band covers their own song, like Eric Clapton did with Layla, or The Police with Don’t Stand So Close to Me. In most cases the songs were great how they were…………leave them alone.

Out of that whole list there is only one song which I like more than the original and that is Guns N' Roses' version of "Live and Let Die." Although most people would disagree with me I don't really like what Van Halen did to The Kinks' classic song. Then again I'm not a big fan of VH.
Come Together - Aerosmith totally ruined this whole song for me, I hate it now.
You Really Got Me – David Lee Roth makes me want to hurl!
Turn the Page – I actually like the Metallica version.
War Pigs – And, Don't kill me but, I like Faith No More's version at least AS much if not more. *cringe*
Land of Confusion – Genesis vs. Disturbed - They are both good in such differant ways
Live and Let Die – Guns n’ Roses, not a big Wings fan.
Helter Skelter – The Beatles - no one can do a song better than the beatles in my opinion.
Love Reign O’er Me – Pearl Jam, not a big who fan.
I love the original, but Metallica's cover of "Turn the Page" is excellent.
I'm a huge fan of Disturbed, and I love their covers of both "Land of Confusion" and Tears for Fears' "Shout". That said, I like Genesis' original version just a bit more.
I'm glad you put "War Pigs" on that list. Faith No More did a hell of a good job covering the song.
G n' R did another cover, of Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door", which I think is absolutely killer; better than Dylan, IMO.
Jeff - I agree that GnR did a hell of a version. VH did a much heavier version. Those tow arw a toss up for me.
Babe - How did I marry you? YOu don't like VH or The Who!
Bruce - I almost posted the question about "Shout" also, but didn't want to do too many Disturbed. I have to say that the original version of War Pigs is still my favorite, but I really like Faith's live version on the Nativity in Black Tribute album. I also saw Tesla do War Pigs about 5 years ago and it was awesome.
I'm not sure if they ever recorded it, but I've seen Heart do a cover of Zep's "Rock and Roll", and they absolutely kick ass on it. Ann has the kind of voice that can handle a song like that, and Nancy does a mean Jimmy Page...
Some of these are tough, like Aerosmith is just a hair better, VH is great, but The Kinks are superior, Seger over Metallica, Live and Let Die, GNR over McCartney...
I HATE the Disturbed cover of Genesis, it's just bloody horrid, but I'll go with Faith No More over Sabbath and duck as the trash starts flying my way.
Then there's the Stones' version of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away," which I think might be the best cover song of all
Bruce - I've hard them sing Zep before. You're right, Heart does a great job. Great White does well with Zeppelin too.
Ray - The Stones do a very good job on Not Fade Away. Much better than the Dead.
one song that I feel is a toss up between two artists is "The Real Me" by The Who & WASP. Both are great and WASP does an awesome version of it.
Of your list I think that only GnR surpassed the original, although Metallica did a good cover of Segar. As far as Metallica covers, Whiskey In A Jar ruled.
I know that not everyone will agree but I think that Marilyn Manson does a great job with covers. His versions of Tainted Love, and Sweet Dreams were awesome.
In my humble... the only good cover there is Faith No More's. Not that it's "better" per se, just that it's fucking excellent. Mike Patton is my favorite singer EVER! I've always found it funny that the Wings version of "live and let die" is heavier and has better dynamics than GNR.
