Van Halen Reunion

After watching the Van Halen "reunion" press conference, my wife and I got into a discussion about VH. She was never a real fan of them, especially Roth (she can't stand his screaming). Anyway, she said "Well, you were always more into the hair bands than I was." Umm............Hair band? I don't think VH is a hair band. There is no way I could put them into a category with Winger, Poison, Warrant, Ratt or Whitesnake.

I agree.
Influence on the hair bands? Maybe
Hair band? No, Roth was out of the band about the time the hair bands were really starting up.

I agree with both of you: VH was an influence on hair bands. I put VH in the same category as Aerosmith, KISS, the Nuge, etc.....good classic U.S. Rock.

I understand that Van Halen is of better caliber than Winger and Poison, HOWEVER they wore spandex, TONS AND TONS of aquanet hairspray and makeup.....if that doesn't make you a hair band, I don't know what does!!

p.s. and don't even get me started on KISS!!!

Van Halen was rock, pure and simple. Did DLR have big hair and strut around in spandex? Sure. But VH is about as much a hair bad as Aerosmith.

See Babe. They are NOT a hair band! I guess that's what I get for marrying a Dead Head!

VH pre-dated Hair Bands although they definantly set the Hair Band standard. Spandex, Big Hair, and groupies. And never forget Green M&M's.

They have some things in common with hair bands (particularly lyrically) and they were definitely a big influence, but they had too much substance and innovation to be lumped in with that lot.

I definitely wouldn't consider VH a hair band. I won't even make any jokes about David Lee Roth being folically challenged. But seriously, I don't think you can call a group of VH's caliber (their musicianship and DLR's vocal prowess) a hair band.
