A couple of weeks ago, I posted about cover songs and which version you all felt was better. I now have a slight twist on that topic. I have come across some songs that were covered by rock bands that you would not expect. Here's a few:
- Van Halen covering Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" (with slightly modified lyrics)
- Faith No More covering Lionel Richie's "Easy"
- Type O Negative covering Seals & Croft's "Summer Breeze" (this one really threw me when I first heard it)
Can you think of any other unexpected covers?

9 joined the race:
1. Celtic Frost covering Wall of Voodoo's Mexican Radio.
2. Fu Manchu covering Moving in Stereo by the Cars.
3. Metallica covering Whiskey in a Jar by Bob Segar. h
I think Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal is much better than Michael Jackson's.
I hated the Van Halen "You're No Good," it plodded along and was so disappointing after the first album. FNM's "Easy" is really good, it captures the mood of the original with a good twist. I haven't heard TON's song.
I agree with FFF--"Smooth Criminal" got better with a guitar-heavy arrangement.
Some others:
Disturbed doing Genesis, "Invisible Touch" (ok)
Skid Row doing Rush, "What You're Doing" (good)
Coal Chamber w/ Ozzy doing Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" (fun, but not as good as the original)
Everyone doing Jimi's "Little Wing" (nobody matches it, except maybe Sting, who did a great cover).

1. The White Stripes covering Jolene by Dolly Parton
2. Rage Against the Machine covering Beautiful World by Devo
3. Nirvana covering Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Leadbelly
All of these covers may I add are better than the originals in my opinion.
Judas Priest doing Diamonds and rust by Joan Baez
Slayer covering In a gadda di vida by Iorn Butterfly
Let see what I can think of:
1) Tesla covering Signs (The Dead).
2) Tori Amos covering Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) on a B-Side of one of her singles.
3) Motley Crue covering Helter Skelter (Beatles) and Smoking in the Boys Room (Don't know who made the original).
4) Cheap Trick covering Don't be Cruel (Elvis).
5) Disturbed covering Shout (I can see the video, but can't remember the band)
6) Limp Bizkit convering Faith (George Michael)
Those are the first ones that popped into my head.
One of my personal favorites is Rob Zombie covering the Commodores' "Brick House"! Killer version with Lionel Ritchie singing back-up vocals on the chorus (it totally cracks me up that Rob Zombie got him to do that!). If you haven't heard it, it's on the "House of 1000 Corpses" Soundtrack.
Just heard another one on VH1 Classic's Metal Mania that was new to me: Faster Pussycat remade Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." Not too bad, either.

Fred - I didn't know about the Moving in Stereo cover. I'll have to look into that.
FFF - I agree. Personally, MJ should have stopped after "Bad". Thanks for stopping by.
David - The TON version is dark and really is nothing like the original. I had to listento it twice to make sure it was really the same song. Setvie Ray Vaughan did a good version of Little Wing. I remember the "You're So Vain" cover too. It wasn't bad.
Jeff & Mark - I'm not sure if I know those versions.
Talixmer - Shout was Tears for Fears. No one can do Helter Skelter like The Beatles.
Kath - Ironic how you're associating things with Zonbie movies now, huh?
